About Dan's Expeditions

What is a Dan's Expedition?

Dan's Expeditions are hands-on workshops where you learn by doing. Each Expedition consists of a classroom session to learn new techniques followed by a photo shoot at a wonderful location to put new ideas into practice.

We'll start each Expedition with a class full of information to help you prepare for the photo shoot. They're conducted by Dan's own instructors, and some are also taught with experts in a particular field of photography. Classes are usually at Dan's, though some are held on-location.

Then, during the photo shoot, you'll get to practice new techniques out in the field with coaching from our instructors. The immediate feedback you'll get is a great way to learn and quickly improve your photo skills. We'll guide you as much or as little as you want. And Dan's Expeditions are always full of fun and camaraderie.

Some of our Expeditions include an optional image review session after the actual shooting event. You'll be able to submit images to be reviewed with the group, so everyone can learn from actual images taken on location. Submissions can be anonymous, and feedback is directed at learning, not criticism.

Expeditions are open to any brand of camera; the information presented in the classes is not brand specific. Our experts will gladly assist you after the class, and at the shoot, to answer questions specific to your model camera.

To make the most of your Dan's Expedition:

  1. Be sure to have a good understanding of the main functions of your camera. If you're unsure of your camera's basic features, you may want to try one of our digital camera classes first so you're prepared for a day of shooting on location.
  2. Check each Expedition's listing of minimum gear to ensure you come prepared.
  3. Review any considerations for the photo shoot location. Some events may require walking, prolonged standing, or being aware of fast-moving objects (e.g. sporting events where we have special access). Make sure you're aware of these ahead of time.
  4. Come ready to learn, practice, and get feedback. Be ready to experiment with new techniques. Plan to shoot a lot, and be open for input as we help you develop your skills.
  5. Be interactive! All of our Expeditions become social events. Chat with your fellow students and our instructors as we all have an enjoyable time!
