Using Photo Finale

Organizing Your Photos

Think of Photo Finale as your digital shoebox: you can put all you pictures into it so you can find them later. But unlike the dusty shoebox tucked under a bed, Photo Finale can help you to effortlessly organize thousands of photos so that your favorite pictures are right at your fingertips. So it's sort of like a shoebox that works for the Library of Congress.

Finding existing photos on your computer

There are two ways to automatically find and organize all the photos on your computer.

On the Photo Finale start-up screen, click the Organize button (A). Photo Finale will search out all the photos on your computer. It will not move them, it will just catalog where they are located.

If you're in the main part of Photo Finale, you can do the same thing by going to the File menu and choosing Find and Add New Photos Automatically (B).

Getting photos from a digital camera or other source

There are also two ways to add pictures to your library.

On the Photo Finale start-up screen, click the Get Photos button (C).

If you're in the main part of Photo Finale, you can do the same thing by going to the File menu and choosing From Camera, Card Reader or CD (D). Create a name for the folder the photos will be transferred to. The default name is the date, but you can change it to whatever you'd like. Select a name for the folder based on the photos you will be transferring into it.

Renaming photos

To rename all of the photos in a folder: Choose Organize from the menu bar then choose Rename Multiple Photos (F). The default is to use the folder name followed by 001, 002, 003, etc. You may enter a different name for the photos and you may start numbering with any number.

There are a variety of options for date and other information to be included in the new file names, click Customize to access these.

To rename individual photos: Click on the photo to rename. Choose Photo from the menu bar and choose Rename (G). You will see the current name with a place to enter the new name.

When naming files and folders, use only letters and numbers. Using symbols may cause problems. Symbols to avoid include things like this: & # - ? $ ) / !

Removing photo folders

To remove a photo folder from Photo Finale, go to the Organize menu and choose Remove Folder (F). You will be asked to confirm removing the folder from Photo Finale, choose Yes. This will not delete the pictures from your computer, it only removes them from the list inside Photo Finale.
